Mount Hakodate
Mount Hakodate offers a panoramic view of the city of Hakodate. Hakodate’s unique topography makes for a spectacular view that has earned it a three-star rating in the Michelin Guidebook. Once an important military fortress, Mt. Hakodate is now a treasure trove of nature, home to approximately 600 species of plants and 150 species of wild birds. There are hiking trails at the foot of the mountain that take about one hour to complete, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery that changes with the seasons. The observatory at the summit of the 334-meter-high mountain is also a popular spot for enjoying the magnificent panorama and beautiful night views.
Hakodate Morning Market
Hakodate Morning Market is one of Hakodate’s most famous attractions. It is a popular spot that cannot be missed when sightseeing in Hakodate and is easily accessible, being only a 1-minute walk from Hakodate Station. The market traces its roots back to 1945, just after the end of the war, when farmers from neighboring towns and villages brought in vegetables and fruits and began selling them standing in front of Hakodate Station. The 250 or so stores lining the street sell a wide variety of fresh Hokkaido produce, including crabs, salmon, and other seafood, as well as vegetables and fruits sold directly from farms. You can also find all kinds of delicacies, snacks, and daily necessities.
Goryokaku Park
The view from almost the entire length of Goryokaku’s distinctive star-shaped wall offers a panoramic view that changes with the seasons: pink cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fiery autumn leaves in fall, and snowy landscapes lit up in winter. On a clear day, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of Hakodate city, Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Straits, and even the Shimokita Peninsula in the distance.
Onuma National Park
Komagatake, an active volcano, and the large and small swamps, including Onuma Lake, Konuma Lake, and Junsai Swamp, created by the eruption, Onuma National Park is known for its rich natural scenery. In spring, skunk cabbages bloom, and in summer, water lilies and water hyacinths add color to the surface of the lakes. A leisurely walk on the water in a rowboat is also recommended. Enjoy the varied natural beauty unique to Hokkaido. Bicycle rentals are also popular for a leisurely tour along the lakeside path.
Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse
The Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse is located in the bay area with an exotic atmosphere. The row of red brick warehouses facing the harbor is one of Hakodate’s representative landscapes.
The Red Brick Warehouse was opened as the first business warehouse in Hakodate. It was once destroyed by a large fire, but was rebuilt and became the current building. Later, the building was renovated, keeping the exterior of the warehouse intact, and transformed into a complex facility where visitors can enjoy shopping and dining.
The site is divided into four major facilities, and about 50 stores are lined up in retro buildings with a sense of history.
